Screenshots

  • Box 1, a walnut cube at rest with three brass dials on its front face, and arrows and dots below it for turning the box
  • Box 24, a brushed steel and copper box in the middle of a turn
  • A tilt maze carved into a wooden face, with a steel ball to roll to the hole and keep out of the pits
  • A wooden panel that gives a little with each tap, two of four taps done, with the clues found so far in a tray under the box
  • A bronze box with a pipes lock: turn the brass pieces until a line of water runs from the inlet to the outlet
  • A chrome box with a mirrors lock: a lamp, a gem and a grid of mirrors to flip so that a beam of light reaches the gem
  • The opened box 7 with its curio, an hourglass that runs both ways, three stars, 300 points and the boxmaker's note
  • The shelf with a total score of 1,110 and the curios of seven boxes, each with its stars

What Curio is for

Curio is a puzzle box game for Android where every box is built for you from its number, so there is always one more to open. Turn the box in your hands, find the lock that gives way and work out how to open it: shake it, tilt it, rub dust off a brass plate, set the dials, turn the pipes, bend a beam of light to a gem. A calm brain teaser with no account, no timers and no rush.

Every box is tested to be solvable, and box 1 is the same on every phone. Each box holds a curio for your shelf and a note from the boxmaker; the first twenty-four notes tell one story.

Free to play, offline, with one banner ad that never shows while you solve a box and never in exchange for a hint. One purchase removes the banner for good.

Use cases

  • A few minutes on the train: Boxes are short, progress saves by itself and the game works offline.
  • A calm evening puzzle: There are no timers and no rush: set a box aside when it beats you and come back to it later.
  • Using the phone's sensors: Shake, tilt or turn the phone over to open a lock, or do the same by touch.
  • Collecting: Every box leaves a curio on your shelf, and its stars add up to a score to beat.

What it does

  • Twelve kinds of lock: shake, turn it over, spirit level, tilt maze, dust plate, symbol dials, levers, sliding tiles, pipes, mirrors, studs and bells
  • A new box for every number, and a new make of wood or metal every twenty boxes
  • Swipe the box or tap the arrows to turn it; the box never says which side holds the next lock
  • Every motion lock also works by touch, and motion can be switched off in Settings
  • Three free hints for every lock, one small step at a time, never behind an ad
  • One to three stars for every box, points for them and a total score on your shelf
  • A curio from every box on your shelf, and a note from the boxmaker
  • Sound and vibration have their own switches; nothing is told only by sound or only by vibration
